Finalist in the international ArchOutLoud competition. Tenancingo, Tlaxcala, Mexico: This small town outside of Puebla is a hub for human trafficking in North America. In this competition submission, the site of Tenancingo’s central square was given to plan an architectural intervention to address the issue of human trafficking. To address this problem, there must be transformation of the culture. Transformation begins with individuals whose paths are lit with opportunities. We believe the youth of Tenancingo can be spurred on toward a destiny that does not rely on human exploitation. This proposal aims to provide a vehicle for activities to break the cycle of exploitation via a re-planned town square, icon building (with a cafe, library, and learning loft), and a new city emblem of civic pride.
